Division's 6, 7 & 8

Christchurch Football Club, Monday 24th September 2018

Thank you for Christchurch Football Squash Club for hosting the Autumn Men’s Division 6, 7, 8 Interclub Finals.  It is nice to be able to hold these finals at the same venue, to get the competitive vibes flowing as soon as you walk in the door, know everyone is here to compete in the finals.  Now down to the results.  Thank you to Paul Monk, Squash Canterbury Board, for presenting the awards to the winners.

The first match set the standard for the evening with Jimmy and Matt having a very hard-fought battle in 5.  Despite Matt having match ball in the 3rd, Jimmy was the victor.  Gordan and Fabian then took to the court, to battle out another 5 setter, few wood shots from both players ended up with Fabian coming out on top in 5.  Matt and Khawaja snuck off to another court and had a great 4 setter.  Matt be the victor.  So, it all came down to Oscar and Tom to complete the line-up, even with Tom trying anything to get the best of Oscar, including a nice bullet to the back of the knee, Oscar got there in three, with the first set being 19/17.  Well done to both teams, you all played well, and you have had close matches all season, this final could have gone either way, in this case Football came out on top.  Couple of things to note, Jimmy has not lost an interclub match since September 2017, great effort, and your team mate Matt congrats on making it into the C1’s!

This was going to be a massive competition between these two teams.  During the season they had a draw 8/8 then again on points 184/184, so this set the night up for a good competition.  Nick and Chaz were the first up and it was looking like it was going to be a long night, with this match going to 5.  Nick was happy to get the win, admitting he was having difficulty getting his feet moving.  Bob and Isaac stepped up next, Isaac getting around the court with east, must be all that hockey he plays.  Another great match with Isaac winning in four.  Ethan and Paul snuck off to court 4 and battled it out, with Ethan winning in 3.  In the end it came down to the final match between Jason & Mathew, this was a game that could have gone either way.  Jason managed to get the better of Mathew’s hard-hitting game, winning in 4.  This meant the final result was 10/6 to Football, well done team.  The banter at the end of the evening resulted in the country boys coming to town, frightened off by the big city lights. 😊

Again, all these games were played in great fashion, they were competitive and played in good spirits at the same time.  No 5 setters with these teams, but some tough 4 and 3 setters throughout the evening.  Dave and Peter kicked the night off in true Dave style, never giving up and coming out with a win in 4.  Cathy and Matt looked like they were having a great time, there was some well-placed shots into the back corners, Matt getting the better of Cathy in the end in 3 sets.  Duncan and Hamish ran around heaps and got a few knicks here and there, with Duncan the victor in 4.  Shea and Ben had some great drop shots, while also running around a lot, Ben getting the better of Shae in 4.  Very close matches, where the results do not do justice to the high standard of squash and the effort (sweat) put into it.  Well done Malvern on your one-point win to take out Division 8 Autumn competition.
