Squash Canterbury Awards

2018 Junior Boy Squash Player of the Year (The Growcott Cup)

Finalist:

  • Henry Aitken, Waimea
  • Caelum Betteridge, Hoon Hay
  • Matt Growcott, Burnside
  • Tom Marshall, MSR
  • Paul Moran, MSR

All the finalists for this category have had an excellent year and were all very worthy candidates. This was one of our toughest decisions and a close call between Paul Moran and Tom Marshall. However, after careful analysis one boy stood out because of his achievements and consistent performance over the year.

Squash-Cant-2018 Junior Boy Player of the YearWinner :TOM MARSHALL

Tom has had a stellar year, winning a number of titles. His achievements include:

  • being the winner of the Oceania U13 Title in Nerang, AU;
  • The Australian Junior Open U13 Champion;
  • Selection in both the Trans-Tasman U13 NZ team (winning the tie) as well as named in the Year 9/10 NZ Sec Schools Trans-Tasman Team.
  • He has a range of successful titles and placements in teams at the Under 13 level that indicate he will become a force to be reckoned with in NZ/Aust for the next 5 years of his junior squash career.  It is for this reason that he was named as the squash Junior Representative for the Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Awards, 2018 (yet to be judged).
  • He is the number one player for the Marlborough Boys College Team, which is outstanding for a Year 9 player. This team have won the Tasman SS Title, and placed 3rd at SISS Championships, as well as gaining the Ross Normal Trophie at NZSS Nationals. (They have been nominated for the MBC Team of the Year Award for Marlborough Boys College)
  • He has also performed very well against competent adult players (Don’t we all like seeing Juniors doing well unless they are beating us)  He was Runner Up in the MCOB Club Champs, he was the Division 1 winner of the Marlborough Open Tournament, as well as the Nelson Open Div 1 winner.
  • He acts with poise and maturity on court, plays with speed and flare, and is a well-liked athlete who is a valuable member of the MCOB club.
