Squash Canterbury Awards

2018 Masters Women Squash Player of the Year (Seeker Cup)

Squash-Cant-2018 Womens MasterThis Award wasn’t quite so hard to judge as we had one individual who had outstanding results during the year. This year’s winner was  Judy Smith, Burside Squash Club.

Judy has had yet another outstanding year of squash and has performed with incredible consistency which is a result of her amazing fitness levels and dedication to training. In September this year, she claimed a staggering fourth National title, convincingly winning the New Zealand Masters +65.

She also confidently represented Canterbury at the NZ Masters Teams event in Tauranga recently. She has also had another great year playing in the Open Grade of Women’s interclub and was part of the Burnside 1 team which recently won the Kathy Hargreaves trophy.

This trophy is very special to those who have been associated with Burnside Squash for many years, so it was a brilliant achievement. Judy had an iSquash win ratio of 71% for competitive games over the past year and it seems clear he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with for many years to come.

At a Club level, Judy has also been a long-serving committee member, hugely active in all aspects of supporting Burnside Squash especially helping with tournaments where he quietly puts in many, many hours of hard work without complaint and is a tremendous role model and mentor.
