2019 Hellers Autumn Interclub - Women's Results

Wms Div 1 supper_optWomen's Division 1

The Women’s Div 1 Squash Interclub played out their finals during the last week of June. For the finals all the women converged on Hoon Hay Club to battle it out and unlike the Men, there weren’t going to be any farewells for clubs to be had. This brought about some great and dynamic squash, so here’s a look at the results.

Football 1 v Hoon Hay 1 - 5th&6th playoff

  • Ella Knutson lost to Kayti Carrick 2-3
  • Caitlin Millard beset Moriya Karati 3-0
  • Hazel Webster lost to Anne Graham 0-3

HOON HAY WON 2-1

These two teams turned out rather different line ups with Football 1’s team having an average age of under 17 and Hoon Hay 1 was covering all the age brackets, junior right through to master. Kayti Carrick the senior and Canterbury rep in the team, played Ella Knutson first up which proved to be a key match as Knutson stepped up her game against the higher graded Carrick. Carrick would have felt lucky to get away with a win taking the fifth set 11-8. The other two matches were more one sided but as they went one a piece to each team Hoon Hay managed to take to victory.

Linwood 1 v Burnside 1 - 3rd&4th playoff

  • Jaimee Leach lost to Kate Fox 0-3
  • Michelle Diffort lost to Sue Wasley 1-3
  • Jessica Wilson lost to Judith Smith 1-3

BURNSIDE 1 WON 3-0

It was an impressive display from Burnside as all three players dispatched of their opponents in fine style. Kate Fox who has recently been named in the Canterbury Senior Team was ruthless against Jaimee Leach as Fox’s power and youth proved too much for Leach. Michelle Diffort had it tough from the get go as she was a fill in for the team and coming up against the experience of Sue Wasley did not bode well for her. None the less she managed a set but Wasley isn’t one to give to many chances and took the win in 4. Judith Smith also beat Jessica Wilson in 4 thus securing the 3rd place for Burnside 1.

  • Sarah Blair lost to Grace Hymers 0-3
  • Petra Curd-McCullough lost to Katie Douglas 2-3
  • Cheree Bray lost to Liza Tonkin 0-3

CHRISTCHURCH 1 WON 3-0 - WOMEN’S DIV 1 CHAMPIONS

As the number 3 Football team, Football 3 did well to make the final, but it goes to show the improvement that the players in the team have been making. Both Sarah Blair and Petra Curd-McCullough have been improving at quite a rate but unfortunately for them they came up against tough opponents. Grace Hymers a recently departed Football member, has also been on the improvement train and has player Blair a number of times this year and got the better of her each time, this was no different as Hymers dispatched of her former team mate quickly. It wasn’t quite the same easy going for Douglas as she took on Petra (whose last name is too long to use as reference). Petra has match balls in both the 4th and 5th set and was unlucky to convert but Douglas showed her class and composure to get back and win. Liza Tonkin finished things off for the team winning in 3 and gave Christchurch a comfortable victory and the title to go with it.

So, a big Congratulations to the Christchurch Club who lead all round and confirmed in very convincing style they were the strongest & worthy team for the Shield.
