Burnside Open – The final event in the Canterbury tri-series

Joe Williams and Ruby Turnbull took out the Burnside Open Squash Championships over the weekend.

Joe Williams the runner up in the South Island champs ten days ago was in scintillating form beating fourth seed Adam Odering in convincing fashion 11/8,11/4 11/2. His athleticism and speed resulted in tremendous pressure on Adam and the result shapes well for the forthcoming Inter-District event in two weeks he will be either no 1 or no 2. Williams beat Scott Gardiner in the semi-finals with No 1 seed Chris van der Salm withdrawing from the event with an injury to the shoulder.

Ruby Turnbull picked up yet another trophy after recently winning the Canty U23 title and Canty Open title. Ruby beat top seed Emma Cormack in 4 sets 15/8,15/10,16/18, 15/11. Ruby had 3 match points in the third set before losing that set 18/16 whereas in the final set both players had 6 point winning phases then Ruby took the set in convincing fashion.
