Winter Interclub Women's Division 1  - Round 1

After a couple of weeks off, it was great to see all the Division One ladies all at the central venue of Christchurch Football last night. Some new faces to the division will hopefully add the great mix of matches that we'll see on court over the next few weeks!

Football 1 vs Christchurch 2

One of the closest battles of the night was fought between Football 1 and Christchurch 2. Michelle Ditfort set the tone of the night with 3 close sets to win against Christchurch's Jemma Erceg. The match between Football's Sarah Blaire and Christchurch's Amelia Wadsworth was an intense five setter. Both ladies were determined not to let anything go, which lead to a nail biting match. Wadsworth took the match winning the first, third and fifth set. The deciding match of the night was won by Christchurch's Katie Douglas, against Football's Cheree Bray. A lot of grit on court, but Douglas managed to seal the win in 3. Final result was a win to Christchurch 8-5.

Hoon Hay 1 vs Burnside 2.

The young Hoon Hay team proved dominant over the experienced Burnside 2 ladies winning 9 matches to nil. It was always going to be a tough night for Burnside, having been promoted from Division 2. Kayti Carrick lead the charge in the number 1 match against Burnside's Yi-Lin Yoong. Carrick dominated the match, showing great promise for the upcoming Senior Teams event. The Karati sisters played well, with Moriya taking the number 2 match in 3 sets against Burnside's wily Bronwyn Smales, and Nadia sealing Hoon Hay's win against Burnside's Heather White.

Christchurch 1 vs Burnside 1

It was Burnside's night, winning 8-3. First match up was Burnside's Kate Fox against Christchurch's cunning Liza Tonkin. Tonkin came to the court strong, reading Fox's game well, but despite this, Fox took the match 3-0. Next up was Christchurch's Grace Hymers and Burnside's Sue Wasley. With both players gearing up towards the Senior and Masters Nationals respectively, this was always going to be a tough game! Hymers' pace and aggressive attacking proved too much for Wasley, dominating the match to win 3-0. The final match of the night between Judy Smith (Burnside) and Wendy Dunlop (Christchurch). It was great to see Wendy back up in Div 1 after a stint in Div 2! Both ladies played a cunning game, but Smith managed to secure the win for Burnside 3-0.

Football 2 vs Linwood 1

A dominating performance was displayed by the home team Football 2, winning nine matches to nil. Ella Knutson lead the charge with a 3-0 win over Linwood's Suzanne Spibey. Freda Walker's cunning match play won out against in the number 1 match against Linwood's Jamie Leech. With both ladies displaying very different styles of play it was a very fun match to watch, but tricky on court! Finally, Caitlin Millard had a close 3-0 battle against lefty Jess Wilson. Millard played a lovely attacking game, to finish the night off.

Next week, the Division 1 ladies get a chance to test out the brand-new Christchurch courts. Come down and support your club mates and check out the new courts if you haven't had the chance to already!
