Hellers Autumn Interclub Men's Open Division - Round 4

Some fantastic squash played at Squashways on Tuesday in round 4 of Heller's Interclub Men's Open division; every moment of the night there was a quality match being played

Burnside went head to head. The Midland boys showed their strength and wins for Christchurch 1 and Football 1.

Next weekend the Heller’s Interclub Men’s Open division will be going to Burnside Squash Club for another 7pm start. It may be another tough week for Williams at the office as he takes on Jackson Beresford, the pair have been known to have a close game or two over the years. Additionally as long as Oliver Johnson doesn’t show up, it will be a battle of the Masters with Jason Oxenham taking on Scott Gardner. With three weeks left of the round robin , who do you think will end up in the top 4?

BURNSIDE 1 vs BURNSIDE 2 (BURNSIDE 2 WON 2-1)

  • Scott Gardner beat Dylan Budge 3-0
  • Ryan Ko lost to Carl Tyson 0-3
  • Nathan Briggs lost to Lucas Rosa 0-3

The Burnside teams went head to head this week and they took to the courts quickly to play. Burnside 2 upset the seedings with a 2-1 win taking them out of last place. Although it would have sweetened things even more if their ‘Central’ import Dylan Budge had given Scott Gardiner more of a scare at No.1. Gardiner a veteran of the game was far too clinical and as a regular at Squashways wasn’t going to give Budge a sniff putting away many winners and taking the match 3-0.

CHRISTCHURCH 1 vs FOOTBALL 2 (CHRISTCHURCH 1 WON 2-1)

  • Jackson Beresford beat  Charlie Barker 3-1
  • Simon Slade beat Joe Petelo 3-0
  • Simon K lost to Richard 1-3

Christchurch 1 showed why they are the No.1 Christchurch team as they took the win this week but it wasn’t without some doubt as Charlie Barker took to the court like a greyhound making Jackson Beresford work for every point. Whilst he could only muster one set the game was well poised at 1-1 and 6-6 in the third but Beresford found his inner Avatar as he punished Barker into all 4 corners of the court, proving the difference in his 3-1 victory.

SQUASHWAYS 1 vs SQUASHWAYS (MIDLANDS) (MIDLANDS WON 3-0)

  • Jason Oxenham lost Lee Barker 2-3
  • Jonnie Honeyman lost to Paddy Mulvihill 2-3
  • Mark Revis lost to Steve Leckie 0-3

Get up Midlands! The out-of-towners showed their strength this week as they put forward a conclusive argument as to who the better Squashways team is. This is largely off the back of Lee Barker taking the No.1 spot off Paddy Mulvihill and whilst it’s causing a rivalry within the team it’s bringing the best out of the team on court. Barker was the underdog against Jason Oxenham who is often known to bulldozer his opponents with his powerful hitting but Barker was up to the task and more as he brought his own brand of Midlands power and finesse to the court to win 3-2.

CHRISTCHURCH 2 vs FOOTBALL 1 (FOOTBALL 1 WON 3-0)

  • Joe Williams lost to Adam Odering 2-3
  • Stephen Gardiner v Matt Smith 1-3
  • David Schultz v Nathan Smith 0-3

Another week, another Football 1 victory, clearly the team to beat with Adam Odering at the helm spearheading the team. Christchurch 2 on the other hand have fallen to bottom of the table and could have done with the expertise of Tim Preston. None the less all three matches were well contested with the grudge match between Joe Williams and Adam Odering not disappointing. Odering flew out of the blocks quick winning the first within moments but Williams found his feet soon after as he took the next two. The game was played at pace throughout with some great retrievals and winners from both players. It was not to be for Williams as Odering showed why he’s a man in form, cleaning up his act for the final two sets to win 3-2.
