Canterbury Open 2017

The Canterbury Open had 85 entries, which included out of town players from Blenheim, Nelson, Takaka, Wanka, Invercargill, Oamaru and Palmerston North.

Chris van der Salm and Ruby Turnbull are the respective Champions of this year Hellers Canterbury Open squash tournament held at the Christchurch Football club last weekend. This is the premier tournament of the Senior year with Chris defending his title won last year defeating second seed Jackson Beresford in straight sets. The match was won 11/6,11/1 and 11/8 with Chris playing a very patient game and completely in control especially the score in second set reflected this Jackson at times tried to hard play some high-risk shots with Chris making the court too big for his opponent. Both finalists were head and shoulders above their opponents never conceding a game. All the men’s games went to their seeding except young Charlie Barker beat No 4 seed Simon Slade 3/1 then lost to Joe Williams

In the women’s final Ruby Turnbull continued her fine form with another tournament win beating evergreen master Freda Walker in the final 15/9,15/8,15/7. Freda played well but youth was certainly on Ruby’s side. Freda had made the final through the back door when top seed Nikki Kennedy had to withdrawal through injury otherwise all top four women justified their seedings.
