 1.    Update on Squash Canterbury

Looking to make a small profit of $5-10K for the year. Had an unexpected cost of $18,000 for work at Squash HQ that was over and above the earthquake repairs. Issues which lead to this occurring have been fixed so there won’t be a repeat. Working on budget for next year. Updated Plan on Page will be circulated with achievements. Realize there is still considerable work to do especially in outlying areas. Planning for 2017 underway. Funding plan also being established.

Most rooms at Squash HQ now let and expect to have the facility running at breakeven in 2017.

  • Levies to Squash Canterbury will increase by $0.70 for 2017
  • Clubs will be advised after Squash NZ AGM (Dec) of any change in their levies.

 2.    Future of Interclub

Agreed to go with a four team format for summer with the top team going up and bottom team down after each round (3 weeks). Squash Canterbury has confirmed capability to do draws. Balls are still an issue – after discussion it was agreed that clubs would survey their own players and come back with a club recommendation for what colour balls and what divisions they should be used.

  • Interclub fees would remain unchanged for 2017

Action point for clubs: - Please respond to SC your club’s recommendation for ball use in interclub events for all four rounds next year. Please respond by end of November to karen@squashcanterbury.co.nz. Expect this to be a minuted and past resolution at club committee level.

 6.    What do clubs require from Squash Canterbury 2017?

Squash Canterbury had set funding priorities for 2017 but needed to confirm with clubs their expectations.

Funding priorities: -

  1. 40hr/week admin role
  2. Coaching development
  3. Rep teams
  4. Facilities improvement (Squash HQ)

Following discussions, the consensus of all clubs was that Squash Canterbury’s focus should be on: -

  • raising the profile and promotion of the game, with the clubs focusing on the providing programs and initiates to follow through on that and increase participation/membership. It will definitely require a working group to ensure success.
  • Re-establishing junior development squads.

This direction may alter the funding priority and will be discussed further at board level.

7. General discussion points

  • Need to get all coaches working on a common path.
  • Need more women coaching at District level.
  • Discussion took place on affiliated clubs i.e. Pay an extra subscription that allows you to play at other clubs (with a home club member). This could improve usage and provide a fund for promoting sport.

Action Point (DH): - SC, circulate paper for discussion by end of November

  • Squash Canterbury board need to provide better feedback on player numbers

etc so clubs have an understanding of how the game is growing/declining.

Action Point (DH): - SC to establish a KPI monitor showing health of game by
